The Eifman Ballet was founded in 1977 under the guidance of Boris Eifman as the "New Ballet" and under the auspices of Lenconcert. Over time it has had a number of different names: The Leningrad Ballet Ensemble (1978 - 1983) and the Leningrad State Theatre of Modern Ballet (1986 - 1991) and since 1991 - St. Petersburg State Theatre of Ballet under direction of B. Eifman. In 1999 the theatre was awarded "Academic" status
